"Burden" Film Screening and Discussion of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion
Racial equity and social justice are critical issues confronting America and key drivers of change. We need to use an equity and inclusion framework to understand different dimensions of racism and how to identify and analyze the root causes of racial inequities. And of course we need to advance diversity, equity and inclusion and embed it throughout companies and organizations.
Nathan Hale William’s film, BURDEN, chronicles the micro and macroagressions faced by men of color in America. We’ll take a close look at what it’s like to be well-educated, successful, and Black in America through this 20-minute film that follows the life of a Black American family man and financial advisor, Bennett Lewis.
We’re delighted to have Nathan Hale Williams, Burden’s writer/director, and Richard Peltzer II, the film’s Executive Producer, speak with us tonight to discuss how they first got the idea to make the film “Burden” and the journey to produce it. We'll also hear from Nathan and Richard about their focus on “Activism through Storytelling” and their other projects and activities.
The film “Burden” was inspired by the high-publicized incidents of everyday injustice in recent years, particularly the occurrence at Starbucks when two young men were arrested for asking to use the bathroom while waiting for a business contact to arrive. The film is designed to give viewers of color the opportunity to experience validation and to allow white viewers to experience a life they may live adjacent to but never really thought about. The director, Nathan Hale Williams himself has personally experienced many of the microaggressions depicted in the film. Linda Dunbar has been working to make the film available to corporate and non-profit audiences through diversity courses.
